Karara Mining Limited is a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals Limited and AnSteel, one of the largest iron ore producers and steel makers in China. Located 200km south-east of Geraldton, Western Australia, Karara is the largest mining operation and the first major magnetite mine in the Mid-West. It produces a premium, high-grade concentrate product for export to steelmakers.

With an expected mine life of 30+ years, it will underpin a long-term iron ore business and provide sustainable benefits to the regional community we operate. The operation includes a large open pit mine, complex ore processing and beneficiation plant and significant infrastructure and logistics networks.

We have an opportunity for a qualified and experienced Hydrogeologist to support the technical functions of the site based water management team. This role leads the day to day operational and compliance monitoring requirements of the water distribution system. Reporting directly to the Water Management Superintendent, this role will assist with the collection, analysis and reporting of water related data. The Hydrogeologist will have a varied role that will incorporate both field and dynamic project work.

**To be considered for this position, applicants must hold relevant tertiary qualifications in Hydrogeology or a related field. They must have the ability to interpret complex ground water and other hydrometric data. Previous site experience in a mining or similar operation highly advantageous**

This role is a 12 month fixed term contract that operates on an 8 days on 6 days off roster

Key responsibilities: 

       Safety and Behavioural:

  • Demonstrate safety leadership by promoting and complying with Karara safety policies and procedures 
  • Role model and lead the way in safe work practices
  • Actively engage in discussions to improve hazard awareness and safety
  • Contribute to the development of continuous health and safety improvements

      Technical:

  • Analyse data and create monthly internal operational reports to inform the business of water management activities
  • Assess aquifer performance and asset utilisation to identify and optimize water supply
  • Assess short term water sources and identify strategies and methods to increase supply to site whilst maintaining required water quality
  • Carry out technical fieldwork across Karara's water resources footprint (i.e compliance monitoring, sampling, installation, data review, root cause analysis etc)
  • Annual, quarterly and adhoc reporting
  • Conducting audits and inspections of Processing, Karara Village and Contractor areas
  • Engage and manage Contractors to meet Karara's operational requirements
  • Engage with internal stakeholders to ensure dry pit mining conditions are maintained and provide hydrogeological input
  • Assist with the development of the water management strategy and identify opportunities for continuous improvement 

Key requirements:

  • Tertiary Degree in Hydrogeology, Environmental Science and/or other related field
  • Mining or related site operations experience preferred
  • Cert III in Water Operations
  • C Class Drivers License
  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting complex ground water and other hydrometric data
  • Experience in groundwater and surface water quality sampling, monitoring and reporting
  • Proficient in MS Office
